LightVanadinite in mineralogy
Of the apatite-pyromorphite group and vanadate class, Vanadinite consists mainly of vanadium oxide, lead and carbon and contains to a lesser extent arsenic, calcium, chromium, copper, iron, phosphorus and zinc.
It forms in oxidation zones of vanadium-bearing rocks, mainly in Morocco (where the finest Vanadinite crystals are found), Namibia, Zambia, Arizona, Mexico and Scotland.
It forms thick, hexagonal crystals, often meadows of flat-tipped or rounded crystals, with occasional transparent gem-quality crystals or coarse aggregates. Its color palette ranges from reddish-brown through yellow to orange.
The history of Vanadinite
Vanadinite was officially discovered in Mexico in 1801. Its name comes from the element vanadium, chosen in 1830 in honor of the Norse goddess Freya, whose second name is Vanadis.
