Variscite in mineralogy
Variscite is a hydrated aluminum phosphate of the phosphate class with traces of copper, arsenic, magnesium and iron.
A secondary formation, it is created close to the earth's crust by phosphate liquids flowing over aluminum-bearing rock.
Its green color is due to the small amount of iron in its composition.
The largest Variscite deposits are in Australia and the United States, in Utah. They are also found in South America, China, Japan, Kazakhstan and Europe (France, Switzerland, Germany, Slovakia, Sweden, Portugal, Czech Republic, UK, Italy...).
The history of Variscitis
Numerous pieces of Neolithic jewelry have been found throughout Western Europe. At the time, it was known as "Callaïs stone". For over 10,000 years, this stone has been used in Europe as an ornament, ritual object and decoration.
Variscite is also known as "Celtic turquoise" and was widely used and appreciated by the Celtic people. Numerous Variscite ornaments have been found in Celtic tombs.
Its name was given in 1837 by a German professor in reference to the Vogtland deposit in Germany, known as variscia in Latin. Its synonym Utahlite refers to the Utah deposit.
Today, it is used in jewelry as a cabochon-cut ornamental stone and as a therapeutic stone.
