What is Palo Santo wood?

Palo Santo, meaning "sacred wood" or "holy wood", is a native South American wood whose use dates back to the Inca civilization. Its virtues and benefits are much appreciated by shamans and indigenous South American communities for purification rituals, but also to optimize healing. Its distinctive citrus scent with woody notes is easily recognizable and probably already familiar to you.

What are the benefits of Palo Santo wood for fumigation?

This wood has many virtues and benefits. It is mainly used for fumigation.

It is burned, for example, to purify people, places and objects such as stones or jewelry made of natural stones, as the North American Indians did with bundles of white sage. It's an excellent cleanser of negative energies. Its smoke purifies your aura and wards off evil spirits before initiating a nourishing ritual.

Its relaxing properties help reduce stress, nervousness and anxiety. It is ideal for meditation and for maintaining emotional balance, as it clears the mind. Palo Santo wood is also an invaluable aid to sleep disorders and concentration.

It is also used as a fumigant to ward off mosquitoes and other flying insects (its fragrance is not at all appreciated by the latter)
and to help fight colds, flu symptoms, asthma, headaches and inflammation. Its anti-inflammatory virtues help relieve joint pain, particularly in cases of rheumatism.

Where, how and when to use Palo Santo Wood?

It's ideal for purifying a space. Whether it's your home, your workplace, a hotel room or an Airbnb, or even your car, which is prone to being the receptacle of a pharaonic amount of stress, Palo Santo wood brings a serene atmosphere and keeps negative energies away. It is also ideally used before a meditation or yoga session, before a debriefing to settle a conflict in your relationship, your family or with a friend, before a reception, a meeting or a special occasion. You can burn them in a place before, but also after an event. Whether it's an argument or simply a stressful moment, purifying the energy of the place again is all the more beneficial.

Purifying with Palo Santo wood before or after these events brings clarity of mind and serenity. It's also advisable to purify after being in crowded places such as shopping malls, airports, etc. Morning purification rituals bring creative inspiration. Evening rituals soothe and improve sleep.

It is also very useful for purifying your stones, crystals or any other ritual object. Some stones can't be purified with water, as they may deteriorate. Remember, it's important to purify your minerals regularly. That way, they're ready to be recharged under the sun, a full moon or near an amethyst geode.

When performing a fumigation ritual, start by making sure that the area you're in is well ventilated to allow the negativity-laden smoke to clear. Light your stick using a lighter, candle flame or match. Let it burn for about 30 seconds before blowing gently on the flame.
Once the flame of your stick has been extinguished and its smoke diffused, remain fully present to yourself and let parasite thoughts be welcomed without clinging to them. Intend to purify the place, person or object of your ritual. Then place your stick in a heat-resistant container, such as a dedicated ashtray, an earthenware dish or an abalone shell.

    • How to purify your home?
Move around with your Palo Santo stick, blowing regularly on it and diffuse its smoke in the rooms you wish to purify. It's best to start at the front door and proceed, if possible, in a clockwise direction. Don't forget to let the smoke diffuse into the less-used corners of the room. These are the main places where negative energies settle. You can also purify an entire room by burning Ayurvedic Palo Santo incense on your incense-holder, for example.

    • How do I purify a stone or object?
Hold your precious bracelets, necklaces, stones or other objects over the smoke for a few minutes. Be sure to maintain your original intention. For large minerals or statuettes, place them next to your container and let the smoke diffuse around them.

    • How do you purify a person's energies?
Always with a good quality of presence and the intention of purifying, diffuse the smoke around you. It is not advisable, however, to inhale the smoke directly. Avoid doing so in the presence of young children or small animals.

At the end of your ritual, or if its purpose is simply to diffuse a pleasant scent, place your container with the stick in the room of your choice. Let the smoke diffuse. But keep an eye on it as long as it's lit. Another option would be to light a Palo Santo scented candle: you can explore our selection of candles for rituals and ceremonies on the dedicated page.

Palo Santo is a sacred wood, so remember to express your gratitude to it at the end of the ritual and thank it for the virtues and benefits it brings you.
