Why use a mallet for Tibetan bowls?
Mallets for Tibetan singing bowls, also known as "striking sticks", are used to strike and tap the bowl to make it ring. They are wooden sticks with a felt-covered rubber band.
There are 2 main types of mallets: red and ochre.
The reds are softer than the ochres, so they're more supple, and therefore produce lower notes. This is how you can hear the fundamental, the basic note of the bowl.
Ochre hitters are harder and will therefore produce more harmonics, i.e. a lower, higher frequency.
