Natural pyrite is formed from iron disulfide and only occurs in the absence of oxygen. Marcassite is a polymorph of pyrite.
Its crystalline system is cubic and it is golden, which is why it gave many false joys to the tireless gold diggers of the time. As a result, it was nicknamed "fool's gold".
