AirFluorite mineralogy
Fluorite is most often of hydrothermal formation and more rarely of metamorphic or sedimentary origin.
The shape of its crystals is impressive: its crystal system is cubic and can take on 7 different configurations, but the cube, octahedron and dodecahedron are the most common. It can also be found in groups of crystals or in granular to fissile masses.
It can be colorless or present a wide variety of colors, most often violet, blue, green, yellow, mauve and rarely red, orange or black. Fluorites with zones of several colors are nicknamed "Rainbow Fluorites".
Most Fluorites fluoresce under ultraviolet light and sometimes phosphoresce. They can also be thermoluminescent (emitting light when heated) and triboluminescent (emitting light when struck or rubbed).
Fluorite belongs to the halide class, and consists mainly of calcium fluoride and a large number of other trace elements that give it its color.
The history of Fluorite
Highly prized in many parts of the world for its beauty and diversity of color, Fluorite was used by the Egyptians to make sculptures and jewelry, by the Chinese to ward off evil spirits and by the Greeks, who carved magnificent vases in Fluorite.
The Romans, meanwhile, claimed that drinking wine from a Fluorite glass prevented drunkenness (something to think about for your next aperitif).
Fluorite sculptures dating back over 1,000 years have been found on the American continent.
Today, it is used in industry, notably in the manufacture of glass and steel, and also for medical purposes, thanks to the fluorine it contains.
Did you know? The largest Fluorite crystal was discovered in Russia, measuring 2.12 metres in height and 16 tonnes.
Fluorite is the first stone to be recognized as a "cultural asset of major heritage interest" (law of August 1, 2003).
