Sacred femininity – Fertility – Love, gentleness – Intuition and – Cycles – Pregnancy, childbirth, menopause – Protection and – Harmony within the couple, sexuality – Serenity

Lunar symbols

It is undoubtedly its characteristic optical effect, adularescence—caused by the interference of light in the fine internal lamellae of feldspar—that explains the stone's historical association with the forces of the moon.

This symbolic link has inspired numerous stories since ancient times, recounting and myths of origin and . Both the Greeks and Romans believed it was formed from solidified moonbeams, and its changing brightness was seen in the West, since Pliny the Elder, as a reflection of the phases of the moon.

In Hindu mythology, it was also described as a condensation of crystallized moonbeams. Today, in India and , where there are significant deposits of moonstone, it is called Shandra kanti, in honor of the moon goddess Shandra – Kanti means "shining." It is given as a gift at weddings to protect the couple, and in some regions, women sew moonstones into their clothes to promote fertility.

Both in ancient Western civilization and in India, it was used as a protective stone.

Moonstone has officially borne its name since the 18th century. Before that, it was long confused with selenite. As their properties are similar in many ways and both have been linked to the moon throughout history, it is very difficult to trace the history of moonstone.

In the West, moonstone was widely used in jewelry during the Art Nouveau period (1890–1910), and in the hippie and movements.

Following an ancient and tradition, today the adularescence of moonstone inspires lithotherapy to associate it and cycles, sacred femininity and intuition.

Moonstone is one of the traditional birthstones for June.
