Tectites in mineralogy, composition, formation and particularities

Tectites were formed millions of years ago when giant meteorites impacted the earth's surface. They are fragments of molten rock expelled by the force of the impact. Made up of up to 80% silica, these rock fragments become natural glass through impact-induced metamorphism. Tectites are mainly composed of alumina and, in small quantities, barium, calcium, iron, potassium, magnesium, sodium and strontium.

Although Tectites are formed by the impact of a meteorite, all their constituent elements are of terrestrial origin, except in rare cases where elements from a meteorite may appear in trace form within a Tectite. This is why the terms "cosmic glass" or "glass meteorites" are misleading.

Tectites have no crystalline system, they are "amorphous" and appear as rounded fragments, drops or irregular ovoid or elongated cheeses a few centimeters long.

Their colors (black for the majority, green for Moldavite and yellow-brown for cintamani) come from the composition of the soil on which they were formed and their names from the place where they were found (Bediasite, Géorgianite, Australite, Indochinite, Moldavite etc.).

Moldavites are rare, bottle-green tektites formed 14.7 million years ago when a meteorite hit Bavaria. The molten rock was ejected 200-400km to the east, ending up in Moravia and South Bohemia in the Czech Republic.

Cintamani (or Chintamani) tektites have the particularity of being brown-yellow in color (colors mostly visible only in sunlight or strong light) and come from Indonesia.

Lybian glass" is a very rare translucent yellow tectite from the Sahara desert in Libya.
