Moldavite
gemstones, pendants, beads
Moldavite is a tectite, a rare natural glass formed by the impact of a meteorite - in this case in Bavaria some 15 million years ago.
In lithotherapy, it is the result of the alliance of the forces of heaven and earth, a stone of profound transformation, opening the heart and consciousness to renewal.
What are the properties and virtues of Moldavite in lithotherapy?
Stone symbols
This rare stone is the result of a major cosmic event: around 15 million years ago, the impact of a meteorite in the Nördlingen region of Germany created a huge crater. The impact of the shock projected incandescent terrestrial material into the atmosphere, which solidified into natural glass as it fell back to earth, mainly in South Bohemia - in the Czech Republic.
Moldavite is a specific variety of tectite. It takes its name from the Vlata River (Moldau in German) in Moravia, where it was officially discovered in 1786. Moldavites from Moravia are highly sought-after for their green color, between olive and yellow.
Archaeological evidence, in the form of amulets, attests to the use of Moldavite in the Neolithic period in this region, suggesting ritual or symbolic use well before modern times.
In the Czech Republic, it is a modern custom to offer a Moldavite as a good-luck charm in a romantic relationship or when proposing marriage. As is its use for fertility, abundance, protection, health, against the forces of evil or to read the future.
Significations and benefits
Moldavite, often referred to as the "stone of the stars" or "stone of transformation", holds a special place among the constellation of minerals linked to spiritual change.
In lithotherapy, it symbolizes the memory of the alliance between the power of a Meteorite's cosmic collision with the earth and the welcome and gentleness of Mother Earth, who provided it with its constituent elements. It is the image of a reconciliation of extreme forces, generating, in an ultimate paradox, lightness and sudden emotional release.
It is a stone with powerful spiritual and energetic effects, a symbolic vortex driving and pushing spiritual evolution towards awareness. It facilitates profound change by opening the heart and raising consciousness.
To tame a Moldavite is to foster your own personal evolution through the foresight to discover your gentleness and ingenuity. She is the only green Tectite that symbolizes strength, healing power and openness of heart. With it, you can learn to free yourself from obsolete shells, those layers of protection that can suffocate you, making it difficult to open up to your true nature.
It teaches you to become aware of, accept and fully live your dual nature, spiritual as well as material, in order to help you find a balance between these two inseparable elements.
Its conciliatory faculties can also be useful for balancing your feminine and masculine polarities, for centering and elevating you aligned between earth and sky in your verticality.
Its openness sheds light on the need to free your mind of worries, to leave more room for original ideas to find solutions and answers to your difficulties.
Traditions
For some, Moldavite is traditionally used as a tool to facilitate out-of-body experiences or to intensify dreams, in order to receive and understand messages from their guides.
Moldavite's high vibratory frequency harmonizes the wearer's energetic bodies and densifies the etheric body, which can be a formidable protection against disease and all forms of negative energy.
Although its effects on the physical plane have not been scientifically validated, it is sometimes used to understand the causes of illness, allowing you to focus on more than just the symptom(s).
How do I use a Moldavite?
Wear a Moldavite as a talisman if you wish both to benefit from its protective virtues and support your awareness.
Some people find Moldavite difficult to tolerate over the long term. If this is the case for you, use it for short periods, taking breaks.
Place your Moldavite on your forehead, at the level of the 3ᵉ eye, whenever you feel anxious, ask yourself lots of questions and if you have worries. Likewise if you want to try a decorporation experience or develop your clairvoyant gifts.
What lithotherapy stones should Moldavite be associated with?
Depending on the wearer's purpose, Moldavite can be combined with complementary stones to balance, amplify or channel its powerful energetic and spiritual effects:
- Combining it with Celestine, Celestite or Angel Stone will help to bring peace of mind and to receive subtle messages.
- the combination with Charoïte, a stone of transformation, can support the healing path initiated by Moldavite, helping to achieve both self-acceptance and profound transformation
- Diamond or Herkimer Crystal is reputed to intensify infra- and extralucent spiritual connections. Its powerful vibration can act in synergy with Moldavite to support meditation.

How did Moldavite come into being?
Moldavite belongs to the tectite category. It was formed around 14.7 million years ago when a huge Meteorite collided with the Earth at a speed of around 70,000 km/h. The impact with the Earth released intense heat, creating an explosion and a crater. Its impact with the earth generated intense heat, creating an explosion and a crater 25km in diameter and 4m deep, located in Ries, Bavaria. This explosion projected molten rock 200-400km to the east. These rocks cooled in flight, forming a multitude of glassy bodies before falling back to earth.
Its composition
It is a vitreous rock composed mainly of silicon dioxide. The other most abundant elements are, in descending order, aluminum oxide, calcium oxide, potassium oxide, iron oxide, magnesium oxide, sodium oxide, titanium oxide, manganese oxide with traces of barium and strontium. Some Moldavites contain as many as 40 different trace elements!
Its color - from light green/yellow to olive green/brown - sometimes translucent, comes from the iron in its composition.
Moldavite has an amorphous crystal system (no regular crystal structure). Large pieces are rare: the largest piece of Moldavite found to date weighs 265.5gr.
Moldavites are rare and expensive. Only one Moldavite is extracted per ton of sand. Its shape is determined by its trajectory through the atmosphere. During the journey, various factors come into play to define the final shape of the cooled rock. The most common shapes are discs, spheres, ellipses or drops. Erosion gives the rock its structure.
Most of the deposits are located in the Czech Republic, within a 400 km radius of the Ries crater.
It has a hardness of 5.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale - a rather hard stone.
