The reasons for a mineral's black color are varied and multiple, and factors can act alone or in combination.
Black may be due to its chemical composition, including titanium or iron, or to its mineral inclusions, to chemical or organic impurities in large proportions, or to the structure of the crystals, which prevents light from passing through.
Another phenomenon that can explain black color is exposure to natural or artificial radiation, which can change the color of a stone. The surface can also develop a blackened patina from exposure to air, light or water.
